It is been quite a while since the last post. We are sorry that the progress in translating the sutras is slow. Hopefully it will speed up in 2010.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION - Sutra on the Great Beings’ Eight Enlightenments

As Buddha’s disciples, [one should] always recite the eight enlightenments of the great people day and night.

The first enlightenment: the world is impermanent. The countries and lands are dangerous and fragile. The four elements are sufferings and empty. The five aggregates are not [the true] self, Rising and ceasing is [a series] of changes – illusory, unreal, [and] uncontrollable. The mind is [an] evil source. The form is the cause of wrongdoings. Investigate like these, [one] leaves [behind] birth and death gradually.

The second awakening: Excessive desires are suffering. Birth and death is wearisome [which] originates from greed and desire. Few desires are non-active [which] makes the body and mind carefree.

The third awakening: the mind is insatiable, only to seek and get more, [thus] increasing our
sins;Bodhisattva is not like that. [He] is always mindful of contentment, at peace with poverty and abides to the path, [with] only wisdom as the activity.

The fourth awakening: Indolence [leads to] degradation. Always practice diligently, destroy the evilness of defilements, smites down the four Maras [and] come out of the prison of skandhas and realms.

The fifth enlightenment:Ignorance [leads to] birth and death. Bodhisattvas are always mindful, study widely and listen extensively, increase wisdom, accomplish eloquence, teach and enlighten all who get great joy.

The sixth awakening: Poverty and suffering [leads to] extensive resentment, widely creating bad affinities. Bodhisattvas practice generosity, contemplate enemies and dear ones equally, do not recall old grievances, and are not resentful of evil people.

The seventh enlightenment:The five desires are much trouble. Though [one] is a secular person, [one] is not tainted with worldly pleasures. [He] is constantly be mindful of the three robes,alms bowl and Dharma instruments,aspires to be monastic, [and] abides to the path purely. [He cultivates] pure practices nobly and sublimely and is compassionate to all.

The eighth awakening: Birth and death is [like] burning flames [with] infinite sufferings and defilements. Vow [to cultivate] the Mahayana mind, bringing relief to all. Be willing to take the place of the sentient beings, experience the countless sufferings,and lead all sentient beings to supreme joy ultimately.

Such eight matters are all buddhas’, bodhisattvas’ – great beings’ awakenings. Practice the path diligently, be compassionate and cultivate wisdom. Sail the Dharmakaya ship to the shore of nirvana. [Then] return again to life and death, delivering and liberating the sentient beings. Use the former eight matters to guide all so that all sentient beings [would] understand that life and death is suffering, give up and leave the five desires, and cultivate the mind along the sacred path. If the Buddha’s disciple recites these eight matters in every-thought moments, [one] ceases countless wrongdoings, advance [on the] Bodhi path, attains Sambodhi speedily, breaks away from life and death forever, [and] always dwells in happiness.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION - The Heart Sūtra - Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya Sūtra

When Avalokitêśvara Bodhisattva practices the profound Prajñāpāramitā ,
[he] perceives that the five skandhas are empty, [thereby] transcending all sufferings and difficulties.

Śāriputra,
form does not differ from emptiness; emptiness does not differ from form.
Form is thus emptiness; emptiness is thus form.
Feelings, perceptions, volitions and consciousness are also the same.

Śāriputra,
[These are due to] the characteristics of all dharmas’ emptiness [which] are non-arising, non-ceasing;
non-defiled, non-pure; non-increasing, non-decreasing.
Thus, within the emptiness, there is no form, no feelings, perceptions, volitions or consciousness;
no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body or mind; no form, sound, smell, taste, touch or concept;
no eye-realm, and even no realm of consciousness;
no ignorance, and no ending of ignorance;
and even no aging and death, and no ending of aging and death;
No suffering, origination, cessation, path; no wisdom nor its attainment. [These are] because there is nothing to be attained.

As [the] bodhisattva relies on Prajñāpāramitā,
[his] mind has no obstruction. Because of no obstruction, there is no fear,
distancing [the] inverted dreams and thoughts, [in] ultimate Nirvana.

[The] buddhas of the three periods , by relying on Prajñāpāramitā,
have attained Anuttara Samyak Sambodhi .

Therefore, [one should] know the Prajñāpāramitā
is [a] great divine dharani, is [a] great illuminating dharani, is [a] supreme dharani,
is [an] unequalled dharani, [which] can eliminate all suffering truly without falsity.

Therefore, [he] recites the Prajñāpāramitā Dharani,
immediately reciting [the] dharani as “gate gate paragate
parasamgate bodhi svaha”.

The Heart Sutra

I received a publisher's interest in looking at my manuscript. It is a good start. Even though most likely I would be rejected. How many times a famous author has to receive rejection before he gets famous. Nevertheless, I get HS to help me to copy edit my work. I am saving up to print this book myself if no one is interested.

Hey, I am quite a talent in Buddhism I must say. I completed the Heart Sutra's translation in hours. Of course, there are A LOT of English heart sutras around. But if you compare with the chinese one we usually read, the meanings are different. My aim for this project is to come out with accurate translation so that the right Dharma can stay in this world, with or without the robed Sangha. Of course, my wish is with the righteous Robed and Lay Sangha. :)

Project Mahayana Sutras

I decided to pursue my passion to translate Mahayana sutras. The first part of the project is to translate 10 common known Chinese sutras into English. For some which are already well translated, I would write to the authors for the authorization to release on this blog as well.
